Electronics Repair vs Refurbishment
6 Oct 2026
Repair and refurbishment are often used as if they mean the same thing. They solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one costs either money or reliability.

What repair does
Repair corrects a specific failure. A board stopped working because a part failed; repair replaces the part and verifies the board. The goal is to restore the fault, not to change the rest of the unit.
What refurbishment does
Refurbishment addresses a unit's overall condition. It cleans and inspects, replaces parts known to wear out, corrects worn connectors and tests the result. The goal is a unit that is fit for a further period of service.
Choosing between them
If a unit is otherwise in good condition and has one clear fault, repair is usually enough. If a unit is old, has had several faults or is being redeployed, refurbishment reduces the chance of the next failure. For a fleet, refurbishment is often planned and repair is reactive.
The economic test
Both are alternatives to replacement, so both need to be cheaper than replacement over the period you plan to use the equipment. That depends on parts, labour, remaining life and how disruptive a failure would be. Assessment gives you the figures before committing.
Limits of both
Neither can restore a board whose key parts are unobtainable, and neither is a substitute for replacing equipment that no longer meets its requirements.
